Boris is one of the beautiful ruby throated hummingbirds that visit the farm in the Spring and Summer
of the year. They have been doing this for many years and seem to increase in number each season. This year
we seem to have as many as 40 or more. They move a lot and very quickly, so it is difficult to be be sure.
Boris is special, though. Boris is a young bird, born this spring in the trees around here, in Alamance County,
North Carolina. We can tell his age and sex by the limited amount of ruby colored feathers on his throat.
On August 14 of 2005 Boris became ill, probably due to an impact, and was unable to fly and therefore unable
to eat or drink. We found him in 95 degree temperatures, on a concrete walk, baking in the relentless sun.
We rescued little Boris. We fed him and cared for him, but when he could not fly by the next day we placed him in
the hands of an experienced (and licensed) wildlife rehabilitation person. We wanted so much for the little guy to
heal and to make the long migratory flight in September with his family and his friends. We certainly wanted that.
Sadly, however, Boris will not be making that flight. He died in the night on August the 27th as a result of his head
trauma.
